Arch Bishop's Robe 18th Century, French Vestment, Gold, Silk Satin
This embroidery and workmanship was performed by a select group of nuns who provided the garments for Arch Bishops and the Pope. The work is done in actual gold for the raised embroidery and much of the thread is gold including large raised gold embroidery. The embroidery of the flowers has endured the test of time, still bright and amazing quality. This order of nuns has stopped doing this type of work and it is now considered to be a Lost Art and done by machine.
This was displayed as a way hanging and the rings are modern and can be removed. Pure silk/satin and real gold thread in the raised embroidery. These normally do not leave the church and go into the Vatican's collection. This is a rare opportunity to own a pice of history and art. We have not fully researched the piece but the value could go up substantially if that research was done. A theological Historian said the wearer of this piece would have most likely been an Arch Bishop at minimum. A gold and enameled flour de lis attached to inside is damaged but lets us know it is French in the style of the French Court of the Sun King having two of his signs one on the enamel and gold tag and other symbols used in the court of Louis XIVth in the hand embroidery including the heavy raised gold is exquisite and makes for a very heavy cloak.
