This flawless 6.43 carat Blood Red Fire Opal we named, "The Vampire's Teardrop."
The reason this gem is special is the color which was not altered by man. It came from a single piece of rough, located in Mexico with abnormal redness and which produced a perfectly cut Trillion, almost 7 carats in weight, but at 6.43 actual carats it adds up to the number 13 which my staff got a kick out of, considering the name. The single piece of blood red rough also produced a perfectly matching 1.3 carat, trillion cut, (yes, number 13 again), in a gem which even at its smaller size was as red as the larger gem we had named. It was cut in a small shop in the Jewelry district of Thailand, known for producing remarkable gems. Like a beehive of small and large shops jeweler's come from around the world here looking for treasures.
It would have been almost criminal not to allow the seller access to likely the only matching gem to be found, so we included the small gem in the sale. It is the reddest fire opal that either my associates or I have ever encountered, though we keep looking for another; we are pretty sure this was, "the best of the best."
This is one of those gems you covet and never want to sell, so you raise the price but that never works, you always encounter that individual in this world who has an eye as good, or better than your own. It was a sad day when it sold to a customer in Beverly Hills, California. It was purchased for his beautiful, young wife and we were at least chosen to use our finest mounters to create a handmade pendant to surround the gem with D-Flawless diamonds and nestled into 18K gold as a pendant. Normally, this would be a gem I would choose platinum for but I was so glad they chose to use high quality yellow gold. I wanted it for a ring for myself and that is how I always envisioned it.
"The Vampires Teardrop," name was an obvious choice though it was a trillion and not pear shaped. It seemed as though a vampire would have trillion like tears, or cry gems themselves. We hope to one day find a true blood red (with no orange hues), fire opal again, cut so beautifully. But Like the Ekaterina Green Topaz we are just the caretakers never the end of the journey of such a remarkable gem.
